Spring Riding in the Tetons

A Perfect Day for Spring Riding in the Tetons

Dry roads, sunny skies & warm days – just what you want to go spring riding!   But sometimes those perfect spring days never come.  So you need to commit to riding in variable weather to make it happen before June in Teton Valley.   And for that you need a just couple basics:  a great cycling jacket, arm and leg warmers and shoe covers.

Sugoi Hydrolite Jacket

First let’s start with jackets. My personal favorite is the Sugoi Hydrolite Jacket.  It’s waterproof, breathable and extremely compact so it will keep you dry and protected from the wind but will still fit into your jersey pocket when the weather turns sunny.     We also have a convertible jacket from Pearl Izumi that is really cool.  It uses magnets to keep the “cape” portion on the jacket.  This cape is really the arms and the back of the shoulders.  Once you take the cape off, which is easily done while riding, you have a sweet vest.    While not waterproof, this jacket will help protect you from the wind and keep you warm whether you wear it as a jacket or a vest.

Next up on my spring essentials list for cycling: arm and leg warmers. Warmers let you ride in your regular summer kit – short sleeve jersey and shorts – in cooler weather by just adding arm and leg warmers.   You make your shorts into tights and your short sleeve jersey into a long sleeve jersey.  ( I admit I might wear a short sleeve base layer or a windbloc shirt underneath my jersey on cooler days.)  And if the sun comes out and it gets warm, they will fit into your jersey pocket.   Make sure you take a few moments to try on the warmers so that they’ll fit well.   Leg warmers have a long zipper at the ankle so that you can take them off or put them on while still wearing your cycling shoes.    And arm warmers can be rolled down to your wrist if it gets warm.

Finally we’ve got shoe covers. Shoe covers come in two basic types:  a full cover and a toe cover.   Toe covers do just that – they cover the toe and up to half of the shoe with a wind and water resistant fleece lined cover.  They help keep your toes warm mostly by cutting down the windchill on your tootsies.   Full Shoe covers zip in the back of the shoe so once you get them on the shoe (which can take some tugging) you can take your shoes on and off with the covers unzipped but still on the shoe.    And you can walk around in both your toe covers and your shoe covers.

And all these pieces will extend your season into the fall as well or help you keep warm and comfortable on your desert trip this spring.  And all these items have lots of reflective areas on them so that if you are riding in the early morning or at dusk, you’ll be visible.  So let’s get out there and ride – regardless of the weather!
