Fitzy’s Bike Team News: P2P Race Report from Gabe

Gabe’s Race Report for the Point to Point, Park City, August 2013

This was my fourth time competing in this race and the fifth year for the race. Each year the course changes just enough to keep you on your toes. This years course was advertised to “flow” better than ever. Often in these endurance races I find myself underpacing and leaving a little gas in the tank at the finish. As an experiment I wanted to make sure the tank was empty before I crossed the finish line. The early pace I held likely caused me to miss a turn about 30 miles into the ride.

This mistake only cost me five minutes but allowed several riders to get ahead of me. In the years past, if I would’ve made a wrong turn I likely would’ve panicked. I think my experience helped me keep my head in the race.

I definitely feel that my climbing is stronger than my descending but on this day my descending skillz were en fuego (thanks Strava for confirming this). 7h43m’s after starting the ride I crossed the finish line 24th mens pro class. Come to find out several riders missed turns and some even unknowingly shortcut the course. This is a little frustrating for me because I had a strong ride but know there were riders with higher placing than I that didn’t ride the complete course. The P2P race directors are world class and I sympathize with the challenges of marking 75 miles of single track while keeping all of the trails open to public.
